From the Greek roots tele—‘remote’—and metreon—‘measure’—telemetry simply translates to ‘remote measuring’. Although it technically covers the entire process—from measurement, signal transmission and reception to data processing, presentation and storage—the core part of telemetry is telecommunication, i.e. communication over a distance. In that vein, this chapter will not dwell on how the measurements are made, but rather concentrate on how they are transferred. Although telemetry can be understood in a very broad sense, we will limit our exposition to radio communication systems.
